I am in my 3rd cycle of chemo (CMF) and will then undergo radiation and hormonal therapy. I asked my oncologist what my prognosis for this coming back and the possibility of getting mets in any part of my body.

He told me the percentages and then stated that because I was ER+ and PR+ and HER2- that I was in a better place to not have this happen. My question from all of you that do so much research and also for the ladies that do have the mets. Is this true??

Having any cancer is a rotten place to start.

You can consider your position improved from this rotten start because there is tamoxifen and a slew of very new drugs used specifically for ER+ breast cancer. ER- patients don't have drugs specific for their BC.

Ironically, your position is improved because you don't have to bother with Herceptin which is designed specifically for HER2+ BC. Without Herceptin, HER2+ patients don't do as well compared to HER2- patients. Does anyone have stats on survival for HER2+/Herceptin patients vs HER2-/no Herceptin patients?

I think your doc is trying to be a nice guy and put a positive spin on things.

Sounds like my doctor. He'd put a good spin on an earthquake, tornado, all combined. Such a good guy. but then he's seen so much that he has to be positive or he couldn't come to work everyday.

In my research, what your doctor said is exactly what I have read. And my friends in your situation are finding that to be true. I, on the other hand, am HER-2 + and am now finding myself, after 2 years, to have metastatic disease. I am now on Herceptin and Taxotere. I had previously been on A/C and Taxol, mastectomy, and radiation.

Good luck, Carol from Ohio

I am also HER2+ and just finished the AC, will start Taxol next week (for 12 weeks). Radiation will follow for a month...had left breast mastectomy first. I've been regretting not having a double mastectomy because I have a feeling that I will get cancer on the other side. There were cancer cells in a sampling of lymph nodes (they only looked at the left side since that's the side where the tumor was). I didn't get Herceptin when the doctor signed me up for the clinical trial. I was put in the control group that gets AC & Taxol, but, no Herceptin. That was a blow because I felt like I had a better chance if I could get the Herceptin. I am afraid the AC/Taxol/radiation treatment will not be enough. I am much more worried about my prognosis than I was when I first found out that I have breast cancer. I am often alarmed by what I read on this newsgroup...all this information had kind of fed my anxiety! I wonder if that's better than being blissfully uninformed? Oz
