According to the L.A Times for the first time since the government began compiling records, the rate of cancer has begun to decline, marking a tipping point in the fight against the second leading cause of death among Americans.
Researchers already knew that the number of cancer deaths was declining as the result of better treatment, but the drop in incidence indicates that major progress is also being made in prevention.
Matthew decided to check in with some of the nation’s leading adolescent and young adult oncologists to verify whether these fabulously-sounding new statistics actually and accurately reflected those of the young adult cancer community, or if was simply speaking in general terms.
I believe that we are part of a purpose-driven movement; that it is the mission of the young adult cancer community to advocate on it’s own behalf and stand up to the establishment. Our population is rarely given it’s voice so long as grandiose statistics like these continue to dominate the headlines giving everyone in the mass media and general public the false impression that we’re making progress….
