I guess the doctor thinks that the risk of developing another bc after double mastectomy is low enough not to warrant Tamoxifen. It's not totally impossible but of course it is much less likely for a new primary to develop after this operation. The other consideration is the risk of secondaries from the original cancer. If it was stage I (no node involvement and small)
then the risk of secondaries is small and the doctor may feel hormone therapy is not justified because of the additional risks it induces itself ( eg the small possibility of endometrial cancer or stroke). It's all a matter of balancing the risks.
I have never started a poem yet whose end I knew. Writing a poem is discovering.

What did your dr. mean by that? Does he think it only reduces the risk of local recurrence or recurrence on the contralateral side? Or, did you already have a recurrence. Personally, I found the resarch literature a bit confusing re. Tamoxifen; however, I was told that it was supposed to reduce one's risk of recurrence, period. I also had a bilateral mastectomy, but my oncologist recommended I take it afterwards. I refused because it does have a failure rate of about 30% and it does appear that it fails in those whose b.c. was
Her2+ And, mine was Her2+ I had also read that at that time that if one refused Tamoxifen, they would have to offer an aromatase inhibitor if you were post-menopausal. So, that is what I am doing at this time. In regard to your situation, Balsey, you might want to ask him the reason he isn't prescribing it and also get a 2nd opinion. Take care and wishing you all the best!
