My wife is on Xeloda. Two weeks on (1500mg a day) and one week off. During the treatment course, she gets these horrific coughing spells that are coming from her throat. She builds up a significant amount of phlegm and only Vicodin and roxanol together suppress her far enough to stop the cough. Regular cough/phlegm reducers do nothing.
She was hospitalized for this cough a month ago and they could find nothing else wrong with her specifically and wrote off the spells to cancer progression.
I`m now convinced it`s the Xeloda as in her off week last week she didn`t have a single spell. The two weeks prior while on it, she had sometimes two full fits a day.
Now that she`s restarted the current cycle Sunday, she`s in the midst of a fit right now.
Anybody had this/seen this before? Ideas other than stopping the Xeloda?

Also, when someone complains of a chronic tickle or inflammation in their throat that makes them cough frequently, it sometimes is due to "reflux laryngitis"--inflammation of the larynx and trachea caused by aspirating stomach acid into the windpipe. Is your wife experiencing stomach upset, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, anything likehat? If so, then an otolaryngologist (Ear-Nose-Throat) can inspect your wife`s larynx for telltale signs of acid inflammation. Treatment consists of a powerful anti-acid medication like Prevacid or Prilosec.
